Swimming Facts - Frightening, But Reality

Every year in the United States, at least 300 children 5 years old or younger drown in home swimming pools. And most of those drowning occur under the supervision of one or more adults (1).

Swim FinsAZ comes to your home to assist in teaching your child to learn to exit your pool no matter what the situation may be. At Swim FinsAZ infants practice floating and swimming fully clothed because an accident involving water can happen at any time. We also show toddlers and older children how to exit at all areas of their pool. Utilizing all walls, stairs, and fountains at any pool. We hope continuous practice of the exit skills will help minimize the above statistics. But parents, we need your help! It’s your responsibility to continue to practice all swimming, safety and exit skills when your instructor is not around. We also can never say it enough times, continue to talk with your children about the dangers and hazards of any water source, even if it's not summer.

Drowning is a formidable problem in Arizona because of the large number of swimming pools found here. In 2004, 97 people died in Arizona from accidental drowning and submersion. The highest drowning rate (4.4 out of 100,000) in Arizona is for children ages 0-4. After that, the drowning rate is drastically reduced to 0.9 for ages 5-9, 0.5 for ages 10-14, and then it rises again to 1.9 during the risk-taking years of 15-19 and then to 2.2 for ages 20-24. The drowning rate for all ages is 1.8. The drowning rate in Arizona has always been higher than the national rate, sometimes almost double (2,3).
